- Alces. [underlined]
at a narrow spot - 25 yd [yard] swim - + didn't
wait for the calf until she reached the
edge of timber - say 400 yards.
The presence of a grizzly in the area
may account for the nervousness of these
cows.
The cow that lost her calf on the 26th
is hanging around the same place, obviously
hunting for her calf. She walks around
even out in the water grunting at every
two or three steps. I answered with the
whine of the calf + she came right across
the lake toward us.
Enemies:- Found a 2 year old bull killed
by a grizzly about a week ago. The
grizzly was still working it - we saw
it about 100 yards from the kill.
Coyote also at it.
Fertility. We have seen 3 cows at close range,
2 had calves the third had a visibly enlarged
udder + appeared pregnant.
Calf. We recovered the calf drowned yesterday
- #2277. See detail of size - color,
weight on Autopsy sheet 44-5-27.
Topaz Shelter - May 29/44 [1944]
Some moose sign of winter origin +
several sets of fresh tracks but no
animals seen. Willows essentially untouched.
