- Ursus americanus
Jasper, Alta. [Alberta] May 4, 1944
Nelles reports finding a yearling
moose on the Rocky in August.
He watched the kill + a large black
bear was the only animal active
at it. He is confident that it
did the killing.
May 5.
Saw one black at city dump.
Willow Creek. May 25/44. [1944]
Saw one medium sized bear near
Snake Indian river - lower trail. It was
just mooching slowly along the trail paying
no attention to anything.
Blue Creek. May 31/44 [1944]
Tracks of a small black along the
trail near Topaz.
Shalebanks June 2/44 [1944]
Black bear tracks indicated where one
had been patrolling the trails around
the edge of the goat lick.
Banff. June 7/44 [1944]
Saw a black near Graveyards
Jasper. [word crossed out] The wardens report a pronounced
scarcity of bears around Banff. very
few were shot last year - perhaps
10. I wonder if the dead bear I
found last year is indicative of
the reason.
