- Jasper. Journal May 15
Spent most of the day around town arranging
for forthcoming trip north. In evening
visited Patricia, Pyramid, Annette + Edith
Lakes. Only ducks seen were 6 Barrows
Goldeneye. Shot an emaciated elk on
Henry House flats.
Jasper. Showers in AM. fine all P.M. May 16/44. [1944]
Worked on elk all morning, met Jim [James Simpson]
at train at 2 PM + spent afternoon
completing arrangements to leave tomorrow
In evening drove to Maligne Canyon
+ saw 9 sheep. Drove to Henry
House flats + counted 34 deer + 24
elk.
On River 2 goldeneye, 2 mergansers.
4 of the sheep + many of the deer were
not previously seen.
Range: Note that grass carryover on Henry
House flats is nil.
Shale Banks. May 17, 1944
Left town about 10 AM + after a lunch
at Devona came on here. Left Devona at
1:15, arrived here 5:30. Excellent grass
carryover in aspen woodland beyond Celestine
Lake road branch - almost 80-90%. It is
almost entirely Downy [illegible word crossed out] wild rye + pine grass.
On the west shale bank were
Game Count 15 sheep + 2 goat. En route
we saw 8 deer + 2 elk + 1 moose
