this infant into the lake + kept it
standing there for almost an hour.
She then started across the lake, very
slowly, the calf bleated to her several
times + each time she would wait
for it, then slowly walk forward.
After swimming about 400 yards
the calf became turned round + started
back. The cow went back after it
+ the calf again followed but about
5 minutes later it stopped swimming
+ lay inert in the water - dead.
The cow payed no attention to
it for almost 20 minutes - just
stood in the water. She then
looked around + walked a short
distance back toward the starting point
+ was still standing when we left.
Blue Creek. May 27 + 28/44. [1944]

Calves:- Another cow with very small calf was
at almost the same place as we saw the
cow yesterday. When first seen they were
running with the calf very interested in
her back trail. This morning we jumped
her in the same place + she left on
the run letting the calf follow as
best he could. She crossed the lake
