Jasper. May 3, 1945.
First moose calf seen this year was
at Portal creek on April 21. It was
just a few minutes old when seen
Frank Wells states that one year
there were about 7 pairs of twin
calves between the falls + Sunwapta
but by autumn there were
only singles in each instance.
Jasper. May 6, 1945.
Bert White tells me that moose in his
area have decreased greatly in the
last 5 years. He puts the decrease down
mainly to the grizzly + partly to wolves.
This winter in the 6 miles? between
Yellowhead + Geikie there was one
old cow + her calf + no other
wintering moose. Another 2 or 3
from Geikie to Jasper.
Accidents:- At 5 mile I found remains of a
[illegible word crossed out] calf moose. White says it
fell over the cliff above where I found
it + there was nothing to indicate
that wolves were responsible.
Jasper. May 11/45. [1945]
On trip to Maligne saw
1 cow + 6 bull moose between
Medicine L [lake] + Maligne L. [lake] cabins.
