Upper Campbell Lake V.I. [Vancouver Island] B.C. [British Columbia] July 16./35 [1935]
One called by Laing, shot + lost.
One mile above camp Luscher + I had
an excellent opportunity of observing a
family of Pigmy [Pygmy] Owls about the small Creek
which drains a small Lake into Upper
Campbell Lake. We saw the [female symbol] fly into a tall
hemlock, rest for a moment + then disappear
into the woods. The young birds, of which
we believe there were four, were silent
until the parent bird approached then they
set up a continuous chirping, very
similar to, but more metallic sounding,
that the song of the Oregon Junco. As the
parent bird approached the young, it
made a single deep chuckling call
only once + this was only repeated when
it again visited the young with food. On
the parents call the young immediately
began chirping + flew towards [illegible word crossed out] the
approaching parent in haste for food.
When shot a juv [juvenile] [male symbol] fell to the ground
still clutching in one foot the headless
+ tailless body a Creeper. This young ones
stomach contained the body of another
small bird. The stomach of a juv [juvenile] [female symbol] contained
remains of a shrew + the stomach of another juv [juvenile] [female symbol]
a warbler. On July 20th again he and
I saw young Pigmy [Pygmy] Owls in same place
but they kept very high + out of reach up
in tall trees + were silent until parent bird
approached. On July 21st again heard
