- Vancouver Is. [Island] Squirrel [underlined]
Sciurus vancouverensis [underlined]
Tyee Mine, Mount Sicker, Westholme VI [Vancouver Island] BC [British Columbia]
Nov. [November] 8. 1936. This afternoon while
hunting about the north easterly
side of the old Townsite, I found a
squirrels nest in a small hemlock.
This tree about 7" [inches] in diam. [diameter] The nest
was situated about 11 ft [feet] above
ground close to the base of the tree +
was about 17" [inches] in diameter, composed
entirely of dried bracken. On
opening of the nest I found several
pieces of fresh green moss +
about 1 1/2 yds [yards] of cheese cloth
neatly formed into a ball for the
centre lining of the best. An old
decayed log lying near the base
of the hemlock showed ample
signs of the squirrels activity
in digging + piles of cone refuse.
At Upper Campbell Lake on July
23rd 1935 I found several squirrels
nests. One in particular was
examined. It was in a small fir
tree about 15 ft. [feet] above ground +
was composed entirely of Cedar
bark. See page 13 Jl [journal] no [number] 1-1935-
