A day with no fixed appointments
We have both been fatigued +
have spent a reasonably easy
day. This morning we took
taxi to Ueno Park + then went
into the zoo. Noteworthy to
me were Emperor Penguins
5 of them + 1 Adelie [penguin] in a double
glazed refrigerated cage done
in white tile + with a small
swimming pool in it. A
Japanese Shrew[?] small groups of
Axis deer, Chital [chital and axis deer are the same thing] + Japanese
deer. I photographed these.
They had good outdoor pits for
Chimps [chimpanzees] + Orangs [orangutans] + an excellent
series of cranes from the big,
Manchurian Crane down in size
to the Demoisl.[Demoiselle].
While at the park we photographed
the Japanese Museum of Western
Art + the Toku-shi shrine
After lunch we went to the
Mitsukoshi Dept [department] store; a
magnificent building completely
filled with all manner of goods.
I was most impressed by the
display of art subjects, handicrafts,
painting, etc etc, some of it
most attractive.
