- show. The latter was marvelous
especially those trained in waterfall
form + those trained as small trees.
Met [V.R.] Ferris, Cas + Bob Seagel [B.M.Siegel] for
supper - they got off to Hong Kong
tonight.
Nov [November] 13, 1957 Tokyo.
Woke at 5:30, got up at 6 + wrote
letters until breakfast time. Then
proceeded to the Canadian Embassy. where
we met Mr Bull, the Ambassador
and Mr R. Choquoth 2nd secretary.
Met Mr Shinizu, student at Tokyo Univ [University]
+ to be our guide + interpreter.
We drove to the Japanese Ministry of
foreign affairs + picked up the
itinerary they had laid on for us
+ started for the Botanical gardens
of Tokyo University. The director
was away + we were shown around
by 2 assistants, very pleasant
but woefully ignorant of botany.
The garden had many fine trees
including some 600+ year old
Ginkos [ginkgo] but in general it was
a poor show, messy, gates
+ fences rotten, weeds rampant
No research in progress that they
could think of. Picked up a seed
list + saw a very fine small
leaved variety of Acer palmatum.
After lunch drove to the faculty
of Agriculture of Univ. [University] of Tokyo.
Here we met the team, Sunichi
[space left blank], the Professor of Fisheries
Dr Sumiyama, Dr Sabati the
Secretary of the department + one
other man. I find that here Faculty
Fisheries + Agric. [Agriculture] are all in the same
faculty. There are several faculty
stations in the hinterland + an university
Farm outside Tokyo. None of the
men I met were doing very much
nor knew of any significant animal
research. On the farm there are
10 cows + 10 horses upon which
animal husbandry is practiced but
they seemed unaware of fundamental
work in animal science.
Dr Suniyama is working on
nutrition + growth in fish. He
has 2 5 gal. [gallon] glass aquarea [aquariums]
in which he is raising eels
