- Nov [November] 19 [1957] (contd: [continued])
Council meeting at 4.
Dined with the Khans + had a
most pleasant evening.
Nov [November] 20 1957 Bangkok
Went on a field trip with the
Forestry Section. Drove first straight
N [north] 154 km [kilometers] to the forestry Botanical
Garden at Saraburi (Pukal
Bot. [Botanical] Garden).
Here we found an excellent arboretum
of about 3 square km [kilometers] with an adjacent
area of the same size undeveloped.
It includes 6300 trees of 900
species each clearly labelled.
On the way out we drove almost
100 km [kilometers] through the Delta rice
fields where the harvest was just
beginning. Apparently only a
single rice crop a year as opposed
to 5 or so in Japan. These people
are almost amphibians. Saw many
young boys using umbrella nets
for small fish in the Klongs [khlongs], some
men casting nets, others seining,
Noted many rivers.
Many people spending the day
sitting on a water buffalo or
sitting under a tree watching a
group of them. Only when
we were approaching the hill
did the land become drier + we
began to meet some motely looking
Bos indicus [underlined].
After lunch at the gardens
we went down the road 10 miles
or so + then E [east] on a new + modern
road to the Maukluk Forest exp. [experimental]
station. Here a beautiful stream
ran through a young teak plantation
The teak is rapidly being overcut
+ with a 100 to 140 year cycle there
is a poor future for the teak.
On the return we stopped to photogr. [photograph]
a large herd of buffalo wallowing
in a pond. I noted very few
calves in the lot.
Got back to Bangkok at 7 PM
after an arduous day. Changed
+ had dinner with the Council
entertained by M.M. Vyyand Ramkima[?]
the president of the council.
