- Dec [December] 3 [1957] Bangkok
In the AM. [morning] went shopping
with Helen Kahn for rice straw
pictures.
In the P.M. [evening] went out to the
Bangkok School of Agriculture
A surprisingly large place
with 4 main classroom
buildings including a fine
auditorium.
Spent my time on a tour of
the animal units where they
are working on breed improvement
in cattle, buffalo + pigs.
Duroc Jersey are proving to
be the most effective imported
breed but they are doing
reciprocal by bridging using
Large white, Tamworth, Duroc +
the native bent backed hog.
In cattle Red Scindi, Jersey,
Brown Swiss + native are
in use but all have problems
with the humid heat. The
Jerseys are very poor + when
I was there were panting heavily
+ standing in the shade while
the other breeds were
walking about in the sun.
The Red Scindi gives up to
4000 lbs [pounds] per lactation. The
Jersey about 3000 lbs [pounds].
Cross breeding is under
way with testing of temperature
growth + lactation being
used as criteria.
In Buffalo they have
imported some Malayan
buffalo which are short
horned + longer legged + are
a good dairy breed giving
about 6 lbs [pounds] daily.

Left Bangkok by Pan Am
at 3 A.M. arrived Hong Kong at 9:30
+ registered in Peninsula Hotel.
What a blessed relief the cool
bright climate is after the steam
heat of Thailand.
This afternoon we window
shopped + ordered a suit for
me + a dressmaking job for
Joyce [Cowan].
