Saw several shrikes ( [space left blank]
black-headed) one very handsome
eagle with a rust red back
wings blackish, head + underparts
white. Large flocks of ducks
that we took to be cotton
teal, piping teal + gargany [garganey].
Many small finches. 2 kinds
of kingfishers, marsh heron. large
white heron, white egret +
cattle egret.

Attended the Conservation
meeting of the Congress.
The reports are very discouraging
Borneo reports only about
a dozen Sumatran Rhino.
only 2 in Sarawk + they
are in diff [different] areas. The rhino
is worth $500 for its horn.
Orangutan is another
endangered species but here
it is the zoo trade. The
capture of a single Orang [orangutan]
can set the hunter up for
life.
Argus + Bulwers pheasants
are severely depleted through
plumage hunting for native
use. Since Britain took
over the natives have been
permitted shotguns, the result
is the destruction of everything
in sight The estuarine
birds such as darters, [illegible word]
eagle, adjutant + terns are
hard hit but have just
been given protection.
