  • "eye spots" at the base of the tail, parrot fish of 4 different kinds, brilliant green + yellow trigger fish, long (2" [inch]) slender pipe fish with tails that end in a long central filament, 3" [inch] fish with shimmering blue backs, pale yellowish school fish with vertical dark stripes, puffer, mullets with large eyes, + many others. 3 kinds of urchins all jammed into round holes in the coral, snake head cowries secreted in holes, an [illegible word] shell + so forth. About 6 apparent kinds of coral. The surf got pretty bad about the time we started for home + I had a few disturbed thoughts that I hadn't the staying power to make it. However by taking it slow + easy I got back tired but delighted with the mornings activity. Took a few pictures on the beach + then had a snack lunch + drove out to Peel [Peale] Island where Pat [Kawainui] said he could find some birds on their nests. On the way saw 2 golden plover. True enough Pat [Kawainui] took us straight to a colony of blue-foot [words crossed out] red-footed boobies already on their nest platforms. Saw one brown phase bird with red feet (red-footed booby?). There were over 100 frigates none of them courting yet but all very tame. I exposed about 1000 ft [feet] of film. What a day I ache all across my back + am burning with sun burn suffered through my shirt However it was well worth everything + just made the trip for me.
