- July 27 [crossed out] Edinburgh [crossed out]
Another bad day, stayed
in + rested. Drove out to
Queensferry in the afternoon
+ collected some large Acmaea
from rocks near low tide also
4 Thais, some Littorina.
July [illegible date crossed out] 27 Tynron.
Drove down here this
morning, lovely day + the countryside
looked most beautiful. Flowers
are in profusion, rooks, lapwings
+ smaller fry abundant.
Found the Tynron family much
as ever. Jack [McWilliams] very full of his
gravestones. Brian, Eileen [Mackenzie] + their
3 were there when we arrived
but left for Perth soon after.
In the afternoon we drove to
the head of the Nith [River] where I
climbed the S [south] slope + saw a
grey hen + a fox. Jacks [McWilliam]
mind is as keen as ever.
July 28 St Georges Hall Stranraer
Rained on sheets all day as
we drove down to the Solway
+ also the N [north] shore of the firth [Firth]
winding up in Stranraer for
the night. About 6 the rain
stopped. We got soaked today
during a brief beach prowl we
started during a gap in the rain.
July 29. Millport.
Came up from Stranraer. On
the way stopped at the Hanna
Research Station, Ayr [Ayrshire] + had
a visit with Dr Kenneth Blaxter
He is a live wire + has a first
class outfit there. Details on
a separate page.
After lunch we came on
to Largs where we parked the
car + took ferry for Millport.
Dr Harold Barnes had arranged a
hotel room for us. We had a quick
tour of the stations facilities which
are good, clean + well maintained.
About 15 on the staff but
I did not meet many of them.
