A basket of dried squid.
Many sharks + rays including
several hammer heads large +
small, large mackerel to 4 ft [feet]

Most of the fishing is done
by diesel trawler but some

In the late afternoon left by
Phillipine [Philippine] Airlines for Manila where
we were met by Patrocinio Valenzuela
Dean of Pharmacy[?] at U. [University] of Phillipines [Philippine], he
showed us the town by moonlight
stopping at Santo Thomasa [Tomas] University
a Dominican private university of
28,000 students also Far Eastern University
also private + of almost the same size.
Santo Thomaso [Tomas] is the oldest university
in these parts dating from about 1630.
University of the Phillipines [Philippines] has moved
to a new campus at Quezon city
since the war + has some
magnificent buildings designed by
two MIT trained Phillipine [Philippines] architects.
Dinner at the Manila Hotel + off
for Guam at midnight.
Dec [December] 8. [1957] Wake Island.
An uneventful day spent at altitudes
of 13-18000 ft [feet] with the Pacific
swells below. Guam was not
what we expected, quite hilly +
densely vegetated but impossible
to see any detail.
Landed here just at sunset
+ are in the Pan Am. [Pan American] Hotel,
most comfortable.
Dec [December] 9 [1957] Wake Island.
We had a good nights sleep of 11 hours
or so despite the roar of the surf and
the wind. The day has been
partly sunny with broken clouds, I
would guess the temp [temperature] at 77 [+/-]
