- Banff. Alta. [Ablerta]
June 2/43.[1943]
Arrived yesterday. weather bright but
during the night it rained heavily + snow
to a depth of 1 1/2" fell at 100' above the
town. Rain intermittently all today.
Today drove down the fire road
paralleling the Bow on the s [south] side of
the valley. Distance from Banff to
Massive about 11 miles.
The first part of the road passes through
a burn grown up to heavy jack pine
then it parallels some beaver meadow
with numerous willow clumps.
At about the half way point it
passes through some heavy pine +
spruce woods + alongside several
Black spruce muskegs. For the
last 3-4 miles the country becomes
aspen-pine + finally aspen parkland
close along the river.
The vegetation around a small
pond in the jack pine burn exhibited
several clumps of willow browsed
about 80%. The same intensity of
utilization obtained in the beaver meadows
+ in both the willow was holding
its own but not fruiting appreciably
A heavy young stand of Rosa [underlined] on
a road embankment was used
about 20% + showed little or no
die off.
