June 2/43 [1943]
Came back on N [North] side - bears have
cleaned up all remains- including
the skeleton I had so carefully
prepared + hung up.
Saw 44 elk.
24 sheep
7 goat
15 deer. in
June 3/43. [1943] Clearing with intermittent sunshine
during the afternoon - moderate E. [East] wind.
Left Banff at 8 AM + drove to
Boom Creek, walked into Boom Lake
+ then returned to Banff.
On the way out examined the bluffs
at 6 mile. These + the others as far
as 10 mile are badly overgrazed with
local sheet + gully erosion + considerable
mechanical injury to the soil cover
by the continued trampling.
Found the elk widely scattered
+ working into the conifer timber
Saw a total of 10 single cows in
this way, at least 2 of them had
obviously given birth within a
few hours. One cow up as
high as the Vermillion [Vermilion] Summit.
Along Boom Creek 4 or 5 moose
had spent part of the winter.
Two had been there within the
