Robson, B.C. [British Columbia] Aug. [August] 31/43 [1943]
Rode the 20 miles today in 6 1/2 hours.
bitterly cold with driving snow + a
high wind that cut to the bone. The
worst trail I have ever seen.
Had to walk most of the way to
spare the horses.
The vegetation change on the
B.C. [British Columbia] side of the boundary is abrupt
and startling. At the bottom of
the big hill + just before you
reach Kinney Lake you enter
a forest of cedar, hemlock,
Douglas fir, (old) + spruce with an
undergrowth of devils club and
thimble berry.
Lower down the valley becomes
more arid + berries appear along
the trailside. These are chiefly
raspberries + a few Vaccinium ovalium. Lower down still blueberries,
apparently V. [Vaccinium] canadensis. are a dominant
No game of any kind seen but coyote
droppings containing blueberries + raspberries
abundant.
