  • Odocoileus hemionus [underlined] Jasper to Poboktan. April 21/43 [1943] Saw just two deer - at mile 6 - a doe + fawn. Deer do not winter as far up as Whirlpool or the falls. But winter deer hair in coyote droppings indicates autumn presence. 4 more deer on Buffalo Prairie. Jasper to Maligne. April 22/43 [1943] Saw 14 deer - 9 of them around Lake Edith. 3 of these were so thin their ribs showed + one in particular could hardly run. I would judge that senility was responsible possibly with parasite complications [Warden Frank A.] Wells reports a buck that had its leg broken + one antler injured at Athabasca falls made its way down to the townsite to winter. Banff, Alta [Alberta] April 24/43 [1943] Saw. 9 deer in town, 7 1 mile west, 2 at 6 mile 3 at 8 mile 4 at 10 mile = 25 of which 4 were possibly[?] juv [juvenile] among a flock of 9 - other 5 believed to be [female symbol]. Deer do not winter in Lake Louise country. April 26/43 [1943] Saw 3 does + 2 fawns (year old) at 7 1/2 mile on Spray Road. April 24/43 [1943] 3 deer between Banff + L. [lake] Minnewanka
