The area worked today consisted of about
18 square miles of map area + an
estimated 25 sq. [square] miles of surface area
making allowance for barren rock areas
Thus a concentration of better than
6 head per square mile is indicated
or counting barren rock about 5 head
per square mile.
Birds seen:- G.cr [Golden-crowned] sparrows 4, Brewers Sp [Sparrow] 10
Gambels 7; Sparrow Hawk 4, Prairie falcon
1, Marsh Hawk 2, Blue grouse 1 Hermit
Thrush 2.
Cairn Cabin. Aug [August] 4/43 [1943]
Stayed in camp this morning washing
clothes + pressing plants. After lunch
Jim [James Simpson] + I went back up the cabin creek
again + took the south side climbing
to the ridge. We could see yesterdays
bunch of 24 rams right where they
had been the day before + half an
hour later we saw the first
bunch of ewes + young rams we
saw yesterday. In the meantime
we saw a flock of ewes + lambs, a
huge bunch of rams + several
small groups of rams. Here + there
over the hillside were recumbent
elk. In all we looked over about
10 square miles + saw the following
game. Sheep rams 95 ewes 23 ewes [word crossed out] sex unknown 13 + 10 lambs
Elk 9 [male symbol]'s
