Bryant Cr. [Creek] June 13/43.[1943]
then because of absence of horsefeed
turned back + went up to Bryant
Creek cabin arriving about 5 P.M.
There were plenty of elk tracks +
moose tracks + some deer tracks on
the trail all the way. Also grizzly
tracks on both trails.
There had been some moose
wintering on the upper Spray.
but the snow had apparently reached
a depth of 3-4 ft [feet] + at that depth
the available feed is very light
Saw 3 goats on w [west] face of Buller, 10 on
S.E. [Southeast] face of Fortune + [crossed out] 3 on S. [South] Face of
mt [mountain] near Whiteman Pass. + 4 on W [West] face
of mt [mountain] just E [East] of Bryant Cr. [Creek] Cabin.
Jim [James] Simpson thinks that the
prevalence of grizzly in this region
is due to the proximity of berry
patches on the B.C. [British Columbia] side.
Bryant Cr. [Creek] June 14/43 [1943]
This morning walked along the
wonder pass trail toward Mt [Mount] Assiniboine
The trail parallels the n. [north] shore of
Marvel lake + this sidehill is
away ahead of the rest of the valley
so far as spring growth is concerned
Here the new growth of trees, balsam
+ spruce, the former predominating
is much of it only 5'-8' high.
Sheperdia [Shepherdia], cinquefoil, a different currant
