cover of willow + birch. The latter are
used to the maximum possible by
moose winter + summer + deer +
elk summer. The moose dominate
the scene.
Killdeer, Savannah Sparrows, gambel + Chipping
sp. [sparrow] common. Juncos abundant. One pair
Sparrow hawks
Game Seen:- 6 mule deer
6 mt [mountain] Goat
2 moose.
Clearwater Lake July 14/43 [1943]
Bright morning but rain began
at 4PM + continued until 8 PM.
Horses left us + went over Pipestone
Pass a distance of 18 miles. They were
not brought in until 4 P.M. by which
time it was too late + too dirty to
move on.
Climbed mountain north of here +
interviewed a goat, a billy. Back tracked
it + studied food plants. Collected plants
in meadows - see press.
Game seen:- 3 deer 3 moose 1 goat

Left Clearwater Lake at 9:15 this
morning + arrived here at 2 P.M.
Bright morning but we crossed
clearwater Pass in a driving snowstorm
+ a bitter NW [Northwest] wind. Afternoon was
intermittent sun + snow.
