  • Banff, Alta. [Alberta] April 27/43 [1943] the winter + still lies 8 to 10 in [inches] in many places. Here moose feeding was concentrated but the willows are still in good condition only 60% to 70% utilized + bearing flowers. The birch also is in good shape. On the slopes the poplar is browsed 30% + on the earlier exposures trampling + close cropping of grass has lead to soil exposure + some erosion. Apparently the elk have not been long in this area as they wintered higher up the Cascade. However today up [words crossed out] There is plenty of grass on the lower slopes as well as higher up where they snow has just left. Elk were working up to the very summit [space left blank] ft. On the bluff overlooking the Stony Cr [Creek] bridge were 19 sheep from the Lake Minnewanka band other sheep were on Grassy mt [mountain] + on the crest of the Cascade ridge to the west of us. In total we saw 250 elk, 34 sheep 7 moose + 3 deer (near Banff) + saw tracks of 1 grizzly + about 6 coyote. [Ernest] Stenton in December saw 25 moose here in one day. Only one of the sheep seen today was a big ram - he was alone on the w. [west] face of Grassy mt [mountain]. Ruffed Grouse 1, Golden eagle 1, Pileated Wdpkr [Woodpecker] 3, Juncos [illegible word or number], solitaire 2 g. cr. [golden-crowned] kinglet 2, marsh hawk 1, cooper hawk 1, Bluebirds [10]
