- April 25/43. [1943] Banff. Alta. [Alberta]
Examined moose + elk range from Banff
to 18 miles west.
Along the river valley there are many old
beaver meadows + some muskeg areas. In
the muskegs Black spruce + Labrador tea are
dominants but there is a considerable amount
of willow + dwarf birch + it is these that
are supplying the moose + elk browse.
In the drier hummocks there is some
Potentilla. and marginally dogwood, aspen
balsam, willow, rose, raspberry + gooseberry
In the old beaver meadow as typified
at mile 18 the dominant growth is
willow with dwarf birch almost codominant.
Some spruce on the drier elevations +
labrador tea around the margins of such
Scattered Jack pines in both types.
In both willows seem to be of two
types. a red twigged + a yellow twigged,
with the latter making better growth
+ utilized less heavily.
Utilization [underlined]:- At mile 3 Salix [underlined] only about
60% utilized + 80% of the bushes have some
flowers, very little dead wood: dogwood 80%
util. [utilized] Rosa 20%, Ribes 0% + balsam 10%.
At mile 5 on a drier sidehill the
Potentilla + Shepherdia not utilized nor
is the Ribes - Willow is not succeeding on
these drier sites, it is browsed 90% + much
of it is dead. Flowers not present.
