  • Journal. Aug [August] 3/43 [1943] in there from Mt [Mount] Southesk + worked 4 ridges between that creek + Southesk Cairn. In each depression was a stream with a broad or narrow border of willow flats. The intervening ridges were mostly grass + herbs on the S [South] faces + mixed grass + shale or rock on the N [North] faces. Sheep were abundant + indications were that a few head had wintered on the high ridges that blow clear. However I doubt that 30 head could winter on the entire area we examined today. Elk were all over the range + the abundance of shed antlers of both elk + moose indicates a good winter population - Willows killed to 18" or 2 ft [feet]. On high S. [South] facing ridges grass heavily winter forged + clumps decreasing in size, many only 50% of original size. A fully stocked winter range is indicated - almost undoubtedly there is competition between elk + sheep for early spring food. Game seen:- Sheep:- 50 ewes 48 rams. Elk:- 32 elk Moose 2 coyote 1 Deer 3 165 [total]
