Head Brazeau L. [Lake] July 27/43 [1943]
Today drove from Banff to Camp Parker
leaving Banff at 9AM + arriving at 1:30.
En route saw only 1 [female symbol] deer + 1 [male symbol] moose.
Flys [Flies] bad. Distance by car 114 miles.
Left Parker camp by horse at 3 PM +
made camp here at 5:10. Distance by horse
7 miles. Country over Nigel pass broken
rolling alplands with rock outcroppings
+ shale slides. Some ideal sheep range.
Jim [James Simpson] saw 8 sheep on the pass yesterday.
All we saw was 1 [male symbol] elk, a Goshawk
a Leucosticte + the usual Brewers sparrows
white crowns + robins. We are camped
just above the Jonas Cr. [Creek] trail junction with
the Brazeau R. [River] Trail.
Brazeau Basin. July 18/43 [1943]
Left camp this morning at 9:30 - beautiful
day. Rode down the Brazeau R. [River] about 3 miles then
took the Jonas Pass trail over the pass + over
Jonas shoulder into the valley of the
Poboktan R [River]. From there we went over
Indian Pass + down to cut the main
Brazeau River about 3 miles above the lake.
Rode upstream some 5 or 6 miles + camped
at 8 P.M. A long tiring day through
some of the finest alplands I have ever
seen. Distance 35 +/- miles
Game seen. Caribou 5 Mule deer 5
Moose 9 goat 3
Elk 2 coyote 1
