  • April 25/43. [1943] Banff. Alta. [Alberta] Birch (western) 60% util. [utilized] raspberry 40% rose 20% No young aspens but young balsams poplar surviving in spite of moderate browsing. All are increasing in height. Both poplars show chaws. In swampy area at mile 5 1/2 many willows 12 to 20 ft [feet] tall + apparently decadent - where they have been slashed near the road there is vigorous new twig growth, utilized only from 30 to 40% - Here again the red twigged species is used less than the yellow. In the big swamp meadow at mile 18 willow is browsed about 50 to 60%, birch nearer 80% + much of it killed, all small pines are heavily browsed. Heavy growth of grass some of it browsed Made pellet counts to determine extent of moose + elk interaction at mile 9 one muskeg with quite a bit of spruce + at mile 18. Mile 9. Elk 149 moose 39 " 18 " 70 " 120 Shot spike bull elk + found 2 kills or deaths 1 ad [adult] [male symbol] 1 juv [juvenile] + several other scattered bits. Marginalia: Muskeg, willow swamps
