Here again there appears to be heavy
+ direct competition on winter range
between elk + sheep. There is need
of a thorough study of the sheep with
special reference to ranges + elk
interaction. The generally expressed
opinion is that with the arrival of elk
the sheep go (or die).
Isaac Creek. July [word crossed out] Aug. [August] 1/43. [1943]
This morning patrolled the next gully
east for sheep winter kills.
Found 1 ewe - dead 1941-42, 1 ram
14 yrs [years] 38 1/2" dead 1942-43 skull +jaws
not chewed, pelvis + backbone coyote chewed.
Upper molars destroyed or sloughed as
result of Necrotic disease. 1 ram 13 yrs [years]
dead 1938-40, 37", 15 inch base.
No grass carryover on tops, grasses
collected. Codominants wild rye + a
small wheat grass. A red top abundant
+ a feather grass. Wild oats scarce
Range for 20-25 head of sheep.,
about 1/2 way to Isaac Cr. [Creek] is another
small patch of grass that in 1910
carried some 20 head through the winter.
About 2 miles further down another small
patch of high grassland.
In winter 1910 no elk + no moose
+ but few deer - not one taken all
winter. [James (Jim)] Simpson went down the
Brazeau about 8 miles + saw no elk
