normal & almost reasonable in our eyes,
with our army education.
You are right, we are back in the lines
again, but with the exception of the
cold, we are not too badly off. As
for the bitter weather, which by the way
was responsible for the death of one
of our men who was found frozen
stiff, it causes us a little discomfort
& makes letter writing difficult.
In my last letter I believe I mentioned
that events were threatening the success
of our applications for commissions.
We have been before the Col. who was
very agreeable & complimentary.
He said that, despite the fact
that he would be most sorry to lose
us, he would recommend us -

but in about 3 month's time.
There are quite a number of applicants
who were earlier in applying & only 5 per
month are nominated for a cadettship
hence it would be, he pointed out to us,
some while before we could excpect
to be released. He frankly told us,
at the beginning of the interview,
that he doubted whether we were
suitable on the grounds of discipline,
having evidently recalled to mind our
runaways during the training in
England. We had a suitable retord &
satisfied him on that score. Of course
after the stipulated time he may
purposely overlook us & fail to keep his
promise. We are rather helpess & can
