  • The Naming Of Gordon Head In 1846. Gordon Head identifies a suburban district a few miles north-east of Victoria. It is also the location of the University of Victoria. Gordon Head was named after Captain John Gordon, commander of the H.M.S. America, a 50 gun British ship detailed for special service of the British Columbia coast. He was the naval officer who was supposed to have sent an unfavourable account of this country back to Britain. Captain Gordon was also the brother of the Earl of Aberdeen - later Prime Minister of Britain. Although Captain Gordon was well connected, on his return to Britain he was changed with abandoning his post during a border dispute with the Americans. He was found guilty of negligence, court martialled and left the navy in disgrace. Unaware of Captain Gordon's misfortunes in the mother country, Captain Kellet of the H.M. surveying vessel Herald named the area after the infamous captain in 1846.
