- Geology. Bedrock formations date from Mesozoic and Quaternary Eras. Most rocks are igneous or metamorphic in origin, although a small area of sedimentary rock occurs at the northern end of the Saanich Peninsula. Glaciers leave their mark. A large boulder embedded in the ice dug a groove in the underlying bedrock - corner of Bellville and Menzies, Victoria. Rough cliff face and smooth upper surface at Cattle Point is the result of the plucking action by the glacier as it moves towards you.
