Large flocks (15 to 19) of
Pacific loons were also
flying in the same direction
This migration started at about
half tide on the incoming flow.
On the way in we stopped at Clayquot [Clayoquot]
where Mr [Kenneth] Racey took 2 Savannah
Sparrows + a greater Scaup on the
sandspit.
A Hairy woodpecker taken was
feeding young in the nest. [sentence underlined]
May 23 [1931] Rain all day. I got up at 4:30
and went round the traps at
Chesterman + Garrods [also Garrard and Mackenzie] beach. Saw
nothing of interest except a flock
of six Harlequin ducks out of
which I took one an adult male.
The ducks like to feed in the
sheltered channels left by the
outgoing tide.
3 Harbour seals were swimming
in the surf at Chestermans. The
rest of the day we skinned.
May 24 [1931]. Fine.
Got up early and went over
to Chestermans beach + round the
point to Garrods as usual.
On the reef at Chesterman's we
saw a large mink walking
slowly across the rocks, by a
little quick work we cornered
+ shot him. He was of very large size
