Aug. [August] 9 [1931]. Started the day with the
usual trip to the spruce woods
The mouse traps held quite a
representative assortment, 5 peromyscus
2 cinereus shrews, 1 dusky shrew. The
weasel traps had taken a fine
female weasel. Spent the morning
skinning.
In the afternoon set out one more trap
for Phenacomys. There is quite a lot of
old sign but very little fresh work.
I located 6 old nests, all made of
very fine grass, + set in the ground
under fallen logs. The nests were
uniformly about 3 in [inches] in outside
diam [diameter] + 2 in [inches] inside + in total bulk
would about fill a tea cup. Generally
outside that [word crossed out] the rear entrance
+ about 2 inches from the nest
is a midden. In 2 of the nests
examined these contained about
a cup full of droppings. The animals
make runways under the logs very
much the same as (M. [Microtus] serpens)
Under the shelving end of the
log will be a pile of cuttings,
90% bearberry 7 % soopalallie
remainder, Rose, Aspen + strawberry.
Aug [August] 10 [1931]. Traps in the spruce woods
took a fair sized male skunk.
Which pleasant little animal took
a shot at me but luckily missed his aim.
