Tofino. B.C. [British Columbia]
May. 4 [1931]. Morning:- Worked mud flats
East of camp. shore birds not common
gulls very wild. Walked back along
the shore, thick cedar and spruce
with a few open grassy glades
around abandoned farmhouses.
Afternoon:- crossed to Meares
Island in boat + took gulls +
sandpipers + Hudsonian curlew [underlined].
Walked into Tofino to see about
supplies + boat.
Eared grebe - 5 - in full plumage
Red throated diver [loon] - 2 in immature "
Scaup duck - Very common, and in large
flocks.
Mallards - common, feed on mud
flats at low tide.
Pintail - fairly common.
Bufflehead. very "
Goldeneye " "
Merganser (Red breasted) 5 or 6 noted.
Hudsonian curlew - 4 seen on Meares Island.
Least sandpiper - very abundant.
Semipalmated " - " "
Glaucous w. [winged] gull - common but very wild
Ring billed " - small flock of a dozen
individually on rock off Meares Island.
Balled [Bald] Eagle - nesting.
Raven - 2 seen feeding on the beach
crow - common
