lighter still. They are or rather
have been quite numerous here
but a couple of cougars chased them
out during the winter. The [they] go
down to the beach to lick the
salt off the rocks also to eat
seaweed. Apart from that their
food is entirely browse
A single black bear was seen
on the Tofino road last summer
but bears are reported very
scarce. Rain all day.
May 22 [1931].
Took another trip out to Bare = Cleland Isl. [Island] [note inserted above]
Island. The sea was very calm
+ landing was easy. We noticed
that the Glauc. W. [Glaucous-winged] gulls were spread
out more over the higher rocks
+ were present in greater numbers
than on the previous trip. About 300
to 400 being present.
The pigeon guillemots were very
active + showed signs of sexual
excitement. pursuing one another
with wings fla [word crossed out] upraised over
the back + tail spread out parallel
with the ground, all the time
emitting their peculiar hissing
squeak. About 150 were present
Oyster catchers. about 40 birds
were present. I observed what
I take to be their courting
