boulders. Many old nests were also in evidence.
Set out 15 mouse traps + the following day,
July 11th took two clethrionomys + two
synaptomys. The former were both taken under
the same boulder + the latter at different
elevations. The synaptomys were both females, one
with 4 embryos 50% dev [developed]. Porcupine + Pack Rats
very noisy about cabin + kept us awake. The
porcupine chewed the cork handle of the fishing rod
+ some woodwork about the front of the
cabin. Set out two traps for the rats.
July 12/37 Caught two Pack Rats during night
[male symbol] + [female symbol] ad. [adult] + in early morning as I came out
of the cabin met the porcupine at the corner
+ chained it to the bush where it took refuge
in the toilet through which it had chewed a
large hole. Dispatched it after some
trouble. Left in early morning in company
with Joyce [Cowan] + Ian [McTaggart Cowan] for a Leucosticte hunt
Climbed about the slides + mountains
+ [Ian McTaggart] Cowan collected a [female symbol] the second today
(Later examination of throat pouch content showed
they were feeding on small caterpillars, ground
heather leaves + seeds of saxifrage + sprouting
balsam seeds. Climbed up over many steep
ridges to an elevation of approx [approximately] 7400 ft [feet]. Saw the
fresh tracks of two goat + a coyote. This country
is broken + rugged to very great degree +
consequently travelling + climbing is very
difficult. The southerly slope of this ridge
is largely covered with white heather
