- Delphinapterus
Kidliut Bay., Richards Isl. [Island], N.W.T. [Northwest Territories] July 24, 1947
Owen Allen, eskimo took the party
out for a white whale hunt this
afternoon. Whales were abundant
+ 3 were killed, 2 of them being
harpooned + recovered. Both the latter
were large animals.
These whales are quite slow
moving, I don't think they swam
more than 6 miles an hour +
were relatively easy to approach.
This coupled with the shallow
water made the hunt not too
difficult.
Whales were shot with 30-30
rifles + then harpooned with a
copper or bronze harpoon with
free head - A 10 gallon oil drum
acted as a float.
When dead the whale was hauled
to the surface, a rope run
through the floor of the mouth
another attached to the base of
one flipper + the beast taken
in tow.
On shore it is stripped of
skin + blubber in one blanket,
some of the hide is removed from
the blubber + pegged out to dry
for use on water boats.
