  • Whistling Swan. 55 mi [miles] N.W. [northwest] Aklavik. June 25, 1947. Found a nest containing 4 eggs, it consisted of a heap of dead marsh vegetation elevated about 2 ft [feet] above water level and about 8 ft [feet] across the base. The 4 eggs were at the early chick stage - no feathers. All were fertile. Saw 2 other swan's nests in the distance. All were built away from the shore, with open water all around them. Reindeer Station July 17/47 [1947]. In lake just north [word crossed out] south of us we today found a pair of swan with 4 chicks about a week old, We captured + photographed all of them. Young dived to escape us but tired after 5 or 6 dives. Male left but female flew about in great concern, sometimes landing almost on top of her young + forcing them to dive. Kidliut Bay, Richards Isl. [Island] July 24, 25 + 29. On way down here saw 2 prs [pairs], one with 3 young. Here have seen one pair with 3 young. On return saw 5 prs [pairs] + 2 young.
