- Reindeer Station July 11, 1947
In the lakes across the river we
find a small rat population.
So far as we could determine
there were 3 or 4 occupied
burrows on 1/2 mile of suitable
lake shore, then one occupied
burrow on a 5 acre lake, 3
old burrows used this year
but not tennanted now on a
pond 70 yds [yards] by 20 yds [yards].
Enemies:- A black bear had yesterday
dug out a bank burrow. Success
unknown.
Food. 90% sedge, remainder potomageton
+ grass just now. A very little
equisetum still being taken.
Burrows. None of the burrows so
far seen would be habitable
in an 18" [inch] freeze.
Reindeer Station July 12 + 13.
Tundra [underlined] On tundra lake I opened up
a burro [burrow] system inhabited by rats
last summer or fall. The
burrows were under about
3 to 5 inches of hard moss turf
+ dug in fine shale-earth quantities
of food remains, all Carex.
