Injuries [underlined]:- A male #24 taken was in very
poor condition, ragged fur. On the
plantar surface of the rt [right] heel was
a raw area the size of a nickel +
there was a hard swelling of the
bone beneath. This did not seem
to be a fracture, rather a tumor.
Disease [underlined]:- Mr H. [Henry] Firth states that this
year he saw very few rats with
spotted livers, whereas last year
there were many.
Parasites [underlined]:- On #1 lake saw fresh rat
feces containing about 1 1/2" [inch] of tapeworm
Reaction to enemies:-
Reaction is extraordinarily rapid. A
Yellowlegs lighted behind a rat that had
been feeding + had not seen the bird
coming. The rat jumped 4 ft [feet] or so
in a flash, dived + then reappeared,
looked the situation over + returned
to its feeding.
June 18/47 [1947]
On #6 lake took 5 rats
2 [female symbol]'s 3 [male symbol]'s of which 1 [male symbol] + 1 [female symbol]
drowned.
Food [underlined]:- As seen here 95% stem bases of
Carex aquatilis [underlined] 5% bases of newly
sprouted grass.
