- Deer are herded into holding pen + from
there into outer corral, as they
approach this they are apt to break
back + to prevent this occurrence
as soon as the deer enter the narrow
part of the pen a series of men
unroll a broad burlap strip
across behind the deer, + holding
this at waist height advance,
after the deer, in line abreast.
The cut out in the corral is
done by a line of men passing
a white canvas strip through
the herd + forcing the segregated
animals into part (a) with gates at
c, d + e open. After c, d + e
pens are full gate (b) is opened
+ the surplus deer permitted to
rejoin the main group.
Deer are passed 3 to 6 or so at
a time into pens f + g where they
are aged, sexed, marked + castrated
as the need is. They are then liberated
into corral (h) where they are
held until the whole herd has
been put through. They are liberated
onto a narrow-necked peninsula +
held there under observation for
any castration losses.
In the handling of 4000+ deer
only a fractured legs occurred
