- March 26/41 [1941] Hatter + I observed English Sky-
larks in fields near Vict. [Victoria] High School.
Birds were singing in air and on
ground - Several doz. [dozen] seen or heard
no sign of nesting - grass too short?
Visited Lohbrunner's artificial
ponds to see frogs + get temp. [temperature] of
water. Only a few frogs (Rana
clamitans [aka Lithobates clamitans - green frog]) were observed in contrast
to previous visit (March [space left blank]) when
numbers were seen + heard croaking.
Water temperatures, surface, were as
follows - 68 [degree symbol], 72 [degree symbol], 70 [degree symbol] - in
2 or 4 different pools.
E. Lohbrunner claims that these frogs
do not spawn until the beginning
of summer.
Source of the frogs is uncertain.
Some tadpoles were imported from a
fish dealer in middle eastern states
about 8 years ago. Some tadpoles
were obtained from the local Pet shop
but these were mainly, if not all, of
the Bull-frog. Other tadpoles were
obtained from Kresge's Stores when they
sold out their stock of Gold fish etc.
to Lohbrunner's some years ago.
The frogs have thrived, multipled
