May [illegible date crossed out] 28 [1942] Arrived at Still Creek about
10 A.M. this time with canvas boat on
roof of truck. Launched boat at Sperling
Ave. Bridge and went down stream
Saw pair of green-winged teal, Blue-
Winged teal + Cinnamon teal.
Heary young pheasants on shore;
Cowan [McTaggart Cowan] flushed her + located one chick
by clucking.
About 100 yds [yards] above foot-bridge
on st [stream] (S.) [inserted as postscript] bank we surprised a muskrat
with 4 young. She tumbled into the
water with 2 young clinging to her
teats + dived with difficulty. Cowan [McTaggart Cowan]
scrambled ashore and grabbed one
youngster, the other making its escape
into the heavy growth of grasses etc
along the bank. A few yds downstream
we noted a line of bubbles + finally
the female breaking surface with the
2 young in her mouth. We pursued but
she got away in a peice of swamp
land.
Several other rats surprised in various
parts; many feeding platforms noted and
one lodge made of cat tails, grass
etc on a partly submerged raft of
boards + small logs. Muskrat was heard
inside but on removing the ceiling nothing
was in the chamber. Exit led under
water.
