- Ascaphus [Tailed frog] (contd [continued])
Sept 2/42 [1942] (cont'd [continued])
The tail in general is darker [than] the rest
of the body; a definite purple sheen
on the sides. Throat and belly
purplish; undersurface of limbs
flesh.
Cloacal projection prominent, therefore
conclude this specimen to be a male.
Muscle bands on tail still conspicous
Occasional movements of throat and
lower jaw suggest that buccal respiration
may be taking place. The larva was
not seen to rise to surface for air
in the tank it remained hidden; was
found under shelter of stones on bottom.
Total length 37 mm [millimeter]
Length of head + trunk 18.5
Length of tail 18.5
Sept [September] 15? The metamorphosing tadpole
met an untimely end when it climbed
over the screen in the tank + entered
quarters containing 3 crayfish recently
brought from Shawnigan Lake.
At least no trace was found of the
Ascaphus + it is presumed that this
is what happened.
