- upper parts could have been an American
Roughleg Hawk. Flickers were seen for
the first time. Jumped to Blue Grouse.
Coming in to Camp shot a Red
Squirrel and was after another when
a Hermit Thrush got up so I took
it. A young bird in the moult
it has made a very poor skin.
Aug [August] 30 [1943]
Rain + fog in the morning trying to
clear somewhat about eleven o'clock.
These Canada Jays take some desperate
chances with hawks. Twice this morning
they were teasing a sharpshinned Hawk,
and it doing its very best to catch one.
I did my best to shoot the Hawk too
but with no better luck than it
had catching the Jays.
About eleven thirty we started
out for Mt. Washington where the
Marmots are supposed to be. On the
trail toward Paradise Meadows we
saw a woodpecker that was either a
Hairy or a Three Toed woodpecker.
A missed two shots. Rather the
shot failed to reach the bird.
Throughout Paradise Meadows
were signs and runs of mice and
we noted some muskrat work on
the way back.
