- May 25/41 [1941]
Wing very heavy in night, threatening
to uproot tent.
One live Perognathus [pocket mouse] in trap with tail
missing + hind leg broken. In area 50 yds [yards]
above lake shore, 300 [could be 200] yds [yards] N. [north] of tent I saw
a rattlesnake + returned for the gun.
After one shot of 22 dust the snake was
stunned, brought to camp, photographed +
preserved. Ian [McTaggart Cowan] got 6 Perognathus [pocket mouse] + one
Peromyscus [deer mouse].
Spent A.M. [morning] skinning 8 bats collected
the previous night.
Found car battery nearly dead; switch
accidently [accidentally] left on over night.
Drove down road S. [south] along E. [east] shore
of lake. Much swampy ground + ponds
with turtles of several sizes + coots.
Saw Cowbird. Returned to camp on
account of threatening storm with did not
mature.
Ian [McTaggart Cowan] took tour over sagebrush area while
I wrote letters, mended net + began to
pack.
At dusk we drove to other side of lake to
hunt Spadefoots + set traps for muskrats in
lake side pond. While hunting for a muskrat
hole after setting 1 trap on feeding platform a
muskrat was caught in the 1st [first] trap set. Only a few
Spadefoots were heard + none caught. Ian [McTaggart Cowan] caught
5 bats in old place.
