- Ambystoma gracile [Northwestern salamander]
May 20/42 [1942] Drove to Jordan River with Ted Hart
and from there in Jack Clarke [crossed out] Elliots
car North along West Coast road
to a point about 4 miles north of
Jordan River + 50 yds [yards] south of
Merriman's Creek.
Here, egg masses and yearling
larvae of A. gracile [Ambystoma gracile - Northwestern salamander] were found
in pot holes such as formed when
stumps have been pulled or blasted
out. Also in small stream which
was little more than a trickle but
prossibly permanent.
Two egg masses were formed in
a stagnant pond (pot-hole) into
which no water was flowing + which
seemed warmer to the hands. One mass
was jelly only, the larvae having
hatched; the other was near hatching
+ quite green with commensal algae.
About 8 Larvae were taken
in the first pit-hole where they
were observed lying on bottom
in open sunlight. - easily caught
in dip net.
In another pot-hole 3 were seen
+ 2 were taken. These buried in the
mud on sight but were not difficult
to locate - larger than those in 1st hole.
