- Chilliwack July 8th/42 [1942]
Catfish [underlined] - A school of very small
catfish was seen in Sumas Canal, a
few miles south (or west) [added as postscript] of Chilliwack where
we stopped for lunch on way home
from Lac la Hache.
The fish kept well together in a
mass of a hundred or so occupying an
area of about 12" [inches] in diam [diameter] + moving
along the edge of the slough. When I
disturbed by pressing the net through
them, they scattered by reassembled
in two groups which apparently merged
again. The parent fish was
not seen; the young appeared
to be entirely on their own.
The fish averaged less than an inch
in length; some were especially small,
possibly 1/2 inch, resembling small
tadpoles. The bodies were particularly
rounded, giving a tadpole appearance
except for the pectoral fins which were
occasionally visible. (Some were collected)
Anodonta [underlined] [freshwater molluscs]
Large clams were also found
+ collected. They were quite
conspicuous, projecting more than half
the length from the clay bottom.
