- May [illegible date crossed out] 28 (contd [continued]) Coots [underlined] - Many breeding birds seen + several nests were examined at mouth of Still creek. One nest with 6 eggs (collected); other with 9 partly incubated. Near south of Deer Creek. we found a nest with 3 newly hatched young + 3 [crossed out] 4 eggs. Young scrambled into the water but we caught them + also took one pipped[?] egg. On open water was a flock of about 60 coots; apparently non-breeders, possibly transients. Other birds seen - Black headed grosbeak, yellow throat [warbler?], song sparrow, Red Wing [blackbird], Brewer's [blackbird], Pied bill [billed] grebe (1 pr [pair]), Shovelers (1 pr [pair]), Mallard (6-10 pr [pair]), Osprey, Falcon (?), Rooks (2) Lewis woodpecker, Kingfisher, Bittern, Blue heron, Rail (at least 2 spp [species] heard - one sounded like yellow Rail according to Cowan [McTaggart Cowan] - a bird not yet recorded from Canada.). Flycatcher, Pin tail Clif [Cliff] Swallows, Barn swallows + Vaux Swifts [Vaux's Swift].
