- March 3 [1942] (Savary's pond contd [continued])
three Buffle heads + some mallards
were seen on the water. A pair of hawks
(Redtail?) were seen + heard nearby.
Under the first log which I turned over
near the water's edge I found an adult
Ambystoma macrodactylum [underlined][long-toed salamander] - the first
adult I have seen on the Island and
the first record for the Victoria district
except for the larvae taken the previous
summer (See Copeia [space left blank])
Also collected several Triturus [underlined][newt].
Decomposing bodies of 3 Triturus were seen
suggesting they had been killed by boys
who had discovered them.
Hyla [underlined] were abundant in same habitats;
took several to show colour range[?] in
the species.
Muskrat + muskrat workings were
observed. Much water weed ( [space left blank] )
and grass was cut + floating in masses in
the water. Large, red copepods (Diaptomus
[space left blank]) were present in some numbers;
also caddis larvae.
A collected of material from both ponds
(water, devris, weeds + organisms) was brought
back + placed in large tank behind the
cottage.
